Water Lines

I finished running the main water supply pipe and fill pipe between my well and the water tank. It’s about 800 ft between the two points. It took a couple months working on the weekends to complete.

Conceptually it’s simple, but the combination of all the tasks (digging the trench, laying the pipe, leak testing, back-filling, compacting, and running burial ID tape) and sheer length of the trench made for a large job.

For testing, I adjusted the well pressure switch up to 75 psi. The additional pressure from the elevation increased the pressure to 110 psi at the tank inlet. It held steady for two hours. I discovered a small leak in the fill line that I re-glued, but the rest turned out well.

The main supply line is 2″ along with which I included a 1-1/4″ fill line just in-case I need it one day. The fill pipe was second hand that I got for less than 10 cents per foot delivered so the potential-future-benefit-to-cost ratio was very high. The idea with using the semi-expensive large pipe size for the supply line is so that the tank can completely refill from the (future) upper tank quickly (my estimates clock-in at about 1hr 20min). It will also help with fire protection as well since the flow rate is enough to supply a 1.5″ NH fire hose.
